Life of an Indian Farmer
India is a land of villagers, over 75% of her population lives in the villages. The main occupation of the villagers is farming. An Indian farmer lives a simple but hard life. He works hard to produce food for all. He is the bread giver of the country. Not long ago, he led a primitive, orthodox and backward life. He lived in poverty and ignorance. But the Green Revolution of the late 60s brought about a sea change in his life style. His bullock cart gave way to tractor. His Persian wheel was replaced by the electric tubewell. His dirty ponds changed into fish farms and his dung manure made way for chemical fertilizers. His money lenders were replaced by cooperative banks. Thus an Indian farmer of today is definitely far ahead of what his fathers and forefathers used to be. But the major benefit of the Green Revolution has been enjoyed by the big farmers and land lords. A small farmer still works hard to make both ends meet. Costly agricultural machinery is still beyond his reach. He continues to follow the traditional methods of agriculture. He lives a simple, innocent life, away from the din and noise of cities. He works in his fields from sunrise till sunset. Many times, he spends even the nights in his fields. Most of his domestic needs are met in his village. He goes to the city mainly to sell his produce. His life is full of struggles, but he does not run away from them.
