Superstitions
Superstitions are those blind beliefs which have no scientific basis. They are the products of ignorance and illiteracy. Superstitions have been common among people since ancient times. Even the people of highly civilized and advanced countries have a number of superstitions. In India there are many common superstitions. If a black cat cuts across you path when you are going somewhere, it is considered a bad omen. The owl is considered an unlucky bird. Hooting of a owl is supposed to bring bad luck. The cawing of a crow is supposed to announce the coming of some guests to that house. The weeping of dogs is feard to bring death and disaster. If a person comes across someone carrying empty pitchers, this is supposed to bring disappointment. On the other hand the sight of pitchers full of water is considered a lucky sign. People are afraid of the 'evil eye'. Black ribbons are hung at the back of newly purchased vehicles. In order to escape from the evil eye, people sometimes hand a picture of an ugly and fearsome face usually painted at the back of an earthen vessel. It is very strange that people continue believing in superstitions even when most of these do not prove true in actual life. In fact, belief in superstitions is beyond reason and logic.
