The Curse of Dowry System
Dowry system is the most dangerous evil from which Indian society is suffering. The evil of dowry has grown rather than diminished over the years. It has eaten into the roots of Indian society. The dowry system assigns secondary place to women in society. It has been responsible for the development of inferiority complex in women. It has often been seen that the girls who do not bring enough dowry are subjected to harsh treatment by their in laws. Many girls commit suicide. Thus a lot of talent is lost. Besides it, dowry system tells upon our economic life also. Many parents have to sell all their property in order to arrange for dowry. The situation has come to such a point that daughters are regarded as liabilities and boys as assets. The government has passed a law to check this evil. But law alone cannot do much in this direction. The social reformers should wage a war against dowry system. Only then we can raise the social status of women of India.
